Good Samaritans Rescue Lubbock Deputies After Overpass Crash |
Community members' swift actions save lives following a severe accident on I-27 |
On Monday morning, two Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputies, Andrew Cavazos and Jorge Martinez, were assisting a stranded motorist on Interstate 27 near the 98th Street overpass.
While performing their duties, a semi-truck collided with their parked patrol unit, pinning both deputies between the vehicle and the concrete barrier.
The impact left Deputy Cavazos precariously hanging over the edge of the overpass.
Witnessing the harrowing scene, local residents Kohl Stephenson and Wyatt Williams sprang into action.
Stephenson, recalling the moment, said, "I told Wyatt that we needed to get that ladder out ASAP, and luckily enough I had my second guy with me."
Their prompt response was instrumental in preventing a potential tragedy.
Sheriff Kelly Rowe expressed profound gratitude, stating, "There is no question in my mind that lives were saved yesterday as a direct result of those citizens jumping in and helping."
Both deputies were transported to the hospital with serious injuries but are expected to recover fully.
The semi-truck driver, Gregory Vaught, sustained moderate injuries and was also hospitalized.
As of now, no charges have been filed, and the incident remains under investigation.
This event underscores the strength and unity of the Lubbock community, where ordinary citizens become heroes in times of need.
